Top Tips to Get Ready for Your Scalp Micropigmentation Session

At Inked Illusions, we understand how important this decision is — and we’re here to make the entire experience smooth, comfortable, and life-changing. Here’s everything you need to know before your first SMP session to make sure you're 100% ready.

✂️ 1. Shave Your Head (If Applicable)

If you normally keep your hair very short or shaved, we recommend shaving your head either the night before or the morning of your appointment.

  • If you’re using a razor, do it the night before so you have a bit of hair growth visible by morning — this helps us see your natural hairline and follicle pattern clearly.

  • If you’re using clippers, use them with no guard (0) — this will be your new everyday look after SMP.

You’ll likely want to clip your hair every 2–3 days to keep it looking fresh. If you’re shaving with a razor, you can usually go a little longer between grooming sessions.

New to shaving your head? No worries — just go as short as you comfortably can. We’ll take care of the rest.

💧 2. Moisturize Your Scalp Daily Before Your Appointment

If you've never shaved your head before, it’s very common for the scalp to become dry or flaky. To prevent this, start moisturizing your scalp daily at least 3–5 days before your session.

Use a gentle, non-greasy moisturizer once or twice a day — especially after you shave. This keeps your skin healthy, hydrated, and ready for pigment.

🧼 3. Arrive With a Clean Scalp

On the day of your appointment, wash your scalp thoroughly with a mild cleanser. Your head should be free of oils, lotions, hair products, or sunscreen. A clean, dry scalp helps the pigment settle properly and ensures better, longer-lasting results.

🥤 4. Stay Hydrated & Eat a Good Meal

Drink plenty of water and eat a full meal before your appointment. SMP sessions can last 2–4 hours, and you’ll feel much more comfortable if your body is fueled and hydrated.

😌 5. No Need to Worry About Pain — It’s Very Tolerable

You might be nervous about pain, but most clients are surprised by how mild the sensation is. Many describe it as a 2–4 out of 10, and some even fall asleep during the session.

🚫 6. Avoid These Before Your Appointment:

  • No alcohol or caffeine for at least 24 hours before your session.

  • Avoid getting a sunburn — wear a hat or apply SPF in the days leading up.

  • Don’t do a heavy workout the morning of.

  • Avoid shaving your scalp too aggressively right before your session if you’re prone to irritation.
